CALL FOR ARTISTS:
WGGC Tapestry Exhibit, 2012
In late winter of 2012, the Exhibitions Committee will mount an exhibit featuring
tapestries by members (including honorary members). The show will be installed in
mid-February and will hang until mid-April. Cathie Beckman (HGA Certificate of
Excellence in Weaving, Levels I and II) will assist the committee in a curatorial capacity.
Although this exhibit is neither an invitational nor a juried show, the body of submissions
will be examined from several perspectives:
- Whether each object is a true tapestry (See below) or employs tapestry techniques.
- How well each object works within the entire exhibit.
- The quality of the weaving.
- The creativity shown by the artist.
- The finishing of each piece.
- How well each piece is prepared for hanging in our gallery.
The definition of tapestry from the American Tapestry Alliance's glossary will be used
as a benchmark: A tapestry is a "weft-faced, woven cloth with discontinuous wefts,
usually plain weave." All objects must be hand-woven. New and older pieces are
acceptable. Novice as well as veteran tapestry artists are welcome. A member may
submit any number of pieces.
It may be helpful to realize that tapestry can be "exploited" in many forms
beyond wall hangings: for example, in jewelry; belts; purses; eyeglass cases;
book covers; household objects like decorative boxes, chair seats, tea cozies,
and even wastebaskets.
The committee will apply for the ATA Award for Excellence for this exhibit.
The deadline for delivery of entries to the Guild House is February 14th.
NOTE: This exhibit is not the annual members' challenge and does not take the place of the 2012 challenge.
The members of the committee hope that this exhibit will honor the grand tradition of tapestry weaving while encouraging the adaptation of tapestry techniques to newer creative impulses.
