Sound

2012 MEMBERS' CHALLENGE

In recognition of the appearance of Nick Cave and his Soundsuits at the Cincinnati Art Museum in January, our challenge will be related to SOUND! Here are the requirements:

  • Each artwork must incorporate "sound" or "noise" in some form. Some suggestions:
    • a piece that can be moved or manipulated to make actual sound
    • a depiction or image of something that can make sound/noise
    • the use or inclusion of a material or actual object that can make sound/noise (or could have made at one time)
    • text that references sound/noise, either in the piece or as an inspiration
    • some other response to the concept of sound.
  • You may use any fiber technique(s).
  • Each artwork must be newly created for this show.
  • There is no limit on the number of submissions, although all objects must conform to the installation constraints of our "gallery."
  • Each artwork must be delivered in "hangable" condition.
  • The exhibit will be curated. While the Challenge is always an "open" call, the Exhibitions Committee will include those objects that contribute to a show worthy of our Guild House gallery and the public nature of the venue.
  • All submissions must be delivered to the Guild House no later than April 17, 2012.

There will be valuable prizes for the winners of the Viewers' Choice Awards. Also, the prestigious EPIC Award will be presented to one contributor.

Note that it is difficult in our world to avoid sound or noise. If you need some inspiration, here are a few ideas:
  • An object that incorporates audio tape or old CDs or telephone wire
  • A piece that has one or more images of bells/drums/violins/horns
  • A response to Edgar Allen Poe's The Bells (Remember "tintinnabulation?")
  • A garment that is embellished with something that rings, clicks, zings, ratchets, knocks, pops, tinkles
  • A piece made from the fur of something that has/had a "voice"
  • A cell phone caddy or cover (or a series of these)
  • A wind chime with fiber content of some sort
  • A piece made from old (or new?) piano felts
  • A "sound suit" or costume in the Nick Cave style
  • A yarn-bombed vintage radio
  • A fiber greeting card that issues a recorded message when opened
